4 Different Types of Castor Wheels and Their Function

by Alsion Lurie

Tools and machines are made to make our lives a lot easier. One simple tool that has helped us tremendously is the castor wheel.

Castor wheels are the small, sturdy rollers at the base of cabinets, grocery carts, and other heavy furnishings and equipment. There are more than 200 of them you can choose from depending on usage.

This article will give you a brief familiarization of the general types of castor wheels and their uses. You will also have a bit of a background on the common materials used in making castor wheels.

Four classifications of Castor Wheels:

  • Small castor

There are several designs of small castor wheels. Smaller wheels are commonly used and installed on indoor furniture and appliances. Small hard castors are made of polyurethane, while rubber is used for small soft wheels.

  • Castor wheels with brakes

These brake-equipped castors are used in hospital beds, workbenches, and trolleys. So, they are made of heavy-duty and sometimes chemical-resistant materials to withstand the substantial weights they carry.

These wheels have a mechanism that allows the user to easily lock or slow it down. The lock mechanism can be activated through a push of a hand or a press of the foot to a lever.

  • Swivel Castor wheels

Swivel castor wheels can move 360 degrees. That’s why they are usually used in shopping trolleys and even heavy tool chests. They are quite heavy-duty themselves too. They can hold weights ranging from 600kg to 1600kg.

  • Fixed castor wheels

Fixed castor wheels are the opposite of swivel ones. They can only move in two directions. It’s either left or right, backward or forward. They are often used in several home furnishings.

Now that you’ve got yourself acquainted with the types of castor wheels, you have a pretty good idea of what to get for your equipment at home or the office.

But what type of material is best for which type? Let’s find out.

Castor Wheels Materials

  • Soft rubber

Soft rubber is a moulded tread and is bonded to a hard rubber core. This is a good option for light to average loads and maximum capacity loads.

  • Hard rubber

Hard rubber is used for heavy-duty castor wheels. Their minimum carrying weight is the maximum of other types. Hard rubber wheels are resistant to oils, grease and other chemicals.

  • Polyolefin

Polyolefin wheels are lightweight, cost-effective hard tread wheels that can withstand harsh impacts. They protect the surface and can resist abrasion better than tough rubber wheels. These are also resistant to water and grease.

That’s why they are ideal for bakeries, food processors, meat processing, supermarket warehouses, and manufacturing.

  • Polyurethane on cast iron

Polyurethane wheels outlast tread rubber wheels in terms of longevity. They are designed to resist permanent flat spots, resulting in a smooth ride on rugged terrain. Polyurethane can resist chemicals and floor debris too.

  • Rubber balloon on aluminium

Rubber balloons on aluminium are extra thick wheels. These wheels are commonly used for carpet, concrete, brick, and other rough surfaces. Rubber balloon wheels are resistant to water and mild chemicals.

You may have been surprised by the sturdiness and resiliency of castor wheels. But of course, its remarkable characteristics are dependent on how well it was made. So, when purchasing, get supplies from credible manufacturers of castor wheels. Only then can you be sure that they will serve you for a long time.
